Nobel laureate and acclaimed playwright, Wole Soyinka, has sharply criticised US President Donald Trumpโs recent threat to deploy American troops to Nigeria, describing the remarks as ill-informed and insensitive to the countryโs complex security landscape.
Soyinka, who has long been a vocal advocate for peace and governance in Nigeria, argued that the United States lacks a deep understanding of the socio-political and security challenges facing the nation. According to him, such statements risk oversimplifying issues that are rooted in local dynamics and could potentially undermine Nigeriaโs sovereignty.
โThis is not just a misunderstanding; it is a dangerous underestimation of the realities on the ground,โ Soyinka reportedly said. โSecurity challenges in Nigeria are deeply rooted in historical, economic, and political contexts that foreign intervention alone cannot resolve.โ
The Nobel laureate also warned that threats of foreign military involvement could inflame tensions and distract from homegrown efforts to tackle insurgency, banditry, and communal clashes across various regions of Nigeria.
Trumpโs comments, made during a recent international address, suggested that the US might consider military involvement to assist in stabilising the country amid rising security concerns. The statement has sparked reactions from political leaders, civil society, and citizens, with many echoing Soyinkaโs view that such interventions could be counterproductive.
Soyinka called for international partners to support Nigeria through collaborative strategies that strengthen institutions, enhance intelligence-sharing, and promote sustainable development, rather than deploying troops.
