The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has slammed the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the defection of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, accusing the ruling party of fueling the political crisis that pushed him out of the opposition.
PDP leaders at both the state and national levels dismissed fears of instability, insisting that Fubara’s exit does not weaken the party’s structure in Rivers State. The governor formally joined the APC on Tuesday, becoming the latest South-South leader to defect.
Fubara now joins Delta’s Sheriff Oborevwori, Akwa Ibom’s Umo Eno, Enugu’s Peter Mbah, and Bayelsa’s Duoye Siri — all of whom recently dumped the PDP. His move means all six South-South states are now under APC control.
Speaking during an emergency stakeholders meeting in Port Harcourt, the governor said he defected for two main reasons: the PDP failed to protect him during his political ordeal, and President Bola Tinubu’s intervention ensured he remained in office.
Fubara, who had visited the Presidential Villa 24 hours earlier, said his decision was taken in the best interest of Rivers State.
