The Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has alleged that President Donald Trump’s decision to label Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” is tied to Washington’s interest in the nation’s oil resources and strategic economic value.
He said Trump’s claims of widespread Christian persecution were a convenient cover for deeper geopolitical motives.
Speaking during a Sunday service in Lagos, Bakare argued that the United States had long positioned itself to benefit from Nigeria’s vast crude oil reserves and mineral assets critical to new-age technologies. According to him, America’s push into Africa was increasingly driven by competition for resources that power global innovation.
Bakare maintained that while issues of insecurity and religious tensions in Nigeria are real, they do not justify the sweeping allegations of “Christian genocide” recently amplified by the former US president. He warned that foreign powers often weaponise human-rights narratives to gain a foothold in resource-rich nations.
He urged Nigerian leaders to strengthen national unity, address internal divisions, and ensure that foreign governments do not exploit domestic challenges for their own economic advantage.
