Troops of the 3 Division/Joint Task Force, Operation Enduring Peace, have arrested a suspect and intercepted a large cache of ammunition at a checkpoint in Plateau State, as security operations intensify ahead of the yuletide.
The arrest was carried out on Friday at Mairana community in Mangu Local Government Area, following credible intelligence aimed at preventing criminal activities and ensuring a peaceful festive season in the state.
Spokesman for the joint task force, Major Samson Zhakom, confirmed the development in a statement made available to journalists in Jos on Saturday.
According to him, troops, working alongside an intelligence agencyโs tactical team, mounted a snap checkpoint where the suspect was intercepted while transporting two boxes of ammunition.
โDuring the operation, an individual was found in possession of two boxes containing a total of 1,400 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition,โ Zhakom said, adding that the suspect has been taken into custody while investigations continue.
He further disclosed that troops also carried out a separate raid on a suspected criminal hideout at Gwender Village in Bokkos Local Government Area.
Although the suspects reportedly fled shortly before the arrival of the troops, a search of the location led to the recovery of one locally fabricated AK-47 rifle with a magazine, one fabricated pistol, and several rounds of ammunition of different calibres.
Zhakom stated that the operations were part of sustained efforts by the military to rid the area of illicit arms and criminal networks, particularly during the festive period.
He reassured residents of Plateau State of the militaryโs commitment to protecting lives and property, while urging members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to support ongoing security operations.
