The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to take all necessary diplomatic steps to secure the safe return of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who is reportedly trapped in Guinea-Bissau following a sudden military takeover in the country.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance raised during Tuesday’s plenary, where lawmakers expressed concern over Jonathan’s safety and the volatile security situation in the West African nation.

According to the motion, the former President was in Guinea-Bissau on an African Union–mandated peace mission when soldiers reportedly seized power and restricted movement around key government facilities, leaving visiting officials unable to leave the country.

Lawmakers warned that Jonathan’s presence in the country at such a critical moment made the situation more sensitive and required immediate intervention from Abuja, ECOWAS, and the African Union.

They called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to activate all diplomatic channels, including high-level communication with regional leaders, to ensure the former President’s protection and swift evacuation.

The House also urged ECOWAS to take urgent steps to restore constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau and prevent further destabilization in the region.

Jonathan, who has served as a special envoy for peace and democratic transitions across Africa since leaving office, has not yet made a public statement on the crisis.
