Some United States lawmakers have introduced a bill proposing sanctions and visa restrictions against certain Nigerian individuals and groups over allegations of religious persecution and violent attacks targeting Christian communities.

The proposed legislation reportedly calls for the designation of some Fulani militia groups as terrorist organisations and suggests punitive measures against named figures, including the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, alongside organisations such as Miyetti Allah.

According to the sponsors of the bill, the move is aimed at addressing concerns over insecurity, human rights violations and the protection of religious freedom in Nigeria. However, the proposal is still at the legislative stage and would require further debate and approval before any action can be implemented.

The development has sparked mixed reactions within political and diplomatic circles, with analysts noting that foreign policy decisions of this nature could influence Nigeria-US relations and ongoing conversations around security reforms.
