Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernรกndez has claimed that club president Joan Laporta prevented Lionel Messi from returning to FC Barcelona in 2023 in order to avoid a possible power struggle within the club.
According to Xavi, negotiations were already advanced and a deal that could have brought Messi back to Barcelona was nearly finalized after the Argentine star left Paris Saintโ€‘Germain. However, the plan was ultimately halted by the clubโ€™s leadership.
Xavi suggested that concerns over internal influence and authority played a role in the decision, with fears that Messiโ€™s return could create tension within the clubโ€™s structure.
Messi, who left Barcelona in 2021 due to the clubโ€™s financial difficulties and La Liga regulations, eventually moved to Inter Miami CF in the United States instead of making a sensational comeback to the Spanish giants.
The Argentine legend remains Barcelonaโ€™s greatest player, having scored 672 goals and won numerous trophies, including multiple UEFA Champions League titles during his historic career with the club.
Xaviโ€™s comments have reignited debate among fans about whether Barcelona missed a historic opportunity to bring Messi back to the club where he became a global icon.
