The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has condemned alleged plans by certain individuals to violently subvert Nigeriaโ€™s democratic government, warning that anyone involved will face the full weight of the law.

Speaking in Abuja during a strategic meeting with branch chiefs, commanding officers and unit commanders to mark his first 100 days in office, Aneke described the reported coup plot as โ€œshameful, shocking and wholly reprehensible.โ€ He stressed that the Nigerian Air Force remains loyal to the Constitution and committed to protecting Nigeriaโ€™s democratic system.

According to reports, a small group of serving military officers allegedly attempted to orchestrate a coup aimed at removing President Bola Tinubu from power. The plot, said to involve plans for a violent takeover on October 25, 2025, was reportedly uncovered early and neutralised by military authorities.

While initial reactions within the military described the claims as speculative, the Defence Headquarters later confirmed that a plan existed and disclosed that at least 16 officers are currently in custody over the alleged attempt.

Aneke urged commanders to maintain discipline, unity and professionalism, noting that the stability of the armed forces remains crucial to national security. He reaffirmed that the Nigerian Air Force would continue to support lawful authority and safeguard the countryโ€™s democratic institutions.
