The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Sunday inaugurated a new caretaker committee for Enugu State, marking a major reorganisation within the partyโs structure.
The inauguration, held in Enugu, was supervised by the factional acting National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulraham Mohameed, alongside the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu. Party members from all 17 local government areas attended the event.
This development comes shortly after Governor Peter Mbah defected to the All Progressives Congress on October 24, 2025, taking with him members of the state executive council and the PDP leadership. His departure abruptly ended the PDPโs uninterrupted control of Enugu since 1999.
At the ceremony, former chairman of Igboeze South Local Government Area, Vitus Okechi, assumed office as chairman of the caretaker committee, while Chukwunonye Okereke was inaugurated as secretary.
Okechi emphasised party unity and the revival of the PDPโs longstanding political strength in the state. He praised members who remained loyal despite the crisis and expressed confidence that the party would reclaim the Lion Building in 2027.
He added that the PDPโs renewed mobilisation strategy would be โefficient, smart and relentless,โ focused on rebuilding its grassroots base.
Okereke, on his part, highlighted integrity and inclusive leadership as priorities for repositioning the party. According to him, the committee is committed to restoring trust and administrative order.
Also speaking, the immediate past vice chairman, Dr Okey Ozoani, described the development as a timely opportunity to correct past mistakes. He blamed the partyโs recent setbacks on a leadership style that was disconnected from its members, adding that the 2027 election presents a chance for the PDP to restore its legacy.
