Operatives of the Borno State Police Command have successfully defused an unexploded ordnance planted beneath a telecommunications mast in Maiduguri, averting a potential explosion.
The device was discovered on Monday at Chuskon, Federal Low Cost Area of the state capital, following a report made to the Divisional Police Officer of the ITE Police Division.
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, said the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, immediately ordered the deployment of the Explosive Ordnance DisposalโChemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Base 13 team to the location.
He explained that the team swiftly cordoned off the area and safely rendered the device harmless in line with standard operating procedures.
According to preliminary findings, the unexploded ordnance, which had two protruding wires, was strategically planted by yet-to-be-identified persons to cause serious damage. Items recovered at the scene included a hand plier, a T-shirt and a pair of shoes.
Following the operation, the police command carried out sensitisation and safety awareness sessions for residents, urging them to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious objects or movements.
ASP Daso added that the Commissioner of Police has directed all Divisional Police Officers across the state to intensify patrols and strengthen security around critical public and private infrastructure, particularly communication facilities, to prevent acts of sabotage and enhance public safety.
