Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), says Nigeria cannot be classified as a failed or failing state, stressing that the countryโ€™s resilience and institutional stability remain intact.

Buratai, speaking at a public lecture in Abuja, argued that despite security and economic challenges, Nigeria continues to demonstrate the capacity to withstand shocks and manage internal pressures. He said the nationโ€™s history shows that its structures, leadership systems and national cohesion have consistently prevented collapse.

According to him, the narratives portraying Nigeria as nearing state failure overlook ongoing reforms, military operations and governance improvements aimed at strengthening stability across the country. He also highlighted the nationโ€™s economic potential, citing gradual improvements in key sectors.

Buratai urged citizens and commentators to avoid exaggerating the nationโ€™s difficulties, saying constructive engagement is needed to support security agencies and policymakers addressing the countryโ€™s challenges.
