The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to expanding safe and sustainable sanitation across the state, pledging to curb open defecation through the construction of additional public toilets.

Speaking at the 2025 World Toilet Day event in Ikeja, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, represented by Prince Fatiu Akinolu of the Lagos State Advertising and Signage Agency, said the state had approved 20 new public toilet units, bringing the total to 200, to complement the existing 1,710 units across Lagos.

Wahab highlighted plans to strengthen the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office and partnerships with organisations such as WaterAid Nigeria, UNICEF, USAID, and the World Bank to enhance faecal sludge management and promote sustainable sanitation practices.

He stressed that World Toilet Day, themed โ€œWeโ€™ll Always Need the Toilet,โ€ aimed to raise awareness about the need for accessible sanitation amid challenges like aging infrastructure, rising demand, and climate impacts.

Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Gaji Omobolaji, represented by Monsurat Banire, emphasised the life-saving importance of sanitation, while Prof. Babatunde Onajobi described access to toilets as a fundamental human right, urging collective action to improve infrastructure, funding, and hygiene awareness.
