The Federal Government has said it is targeting over 100,000 direct and indirect jobs through the Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme following permits issued to 42 companies under the Access Flare Gas initiative.
The Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Gbenga Komolafe, disclosed this on Friday in Abuja during the Permit to Access Flare Gas ceremony for the 2022 NGFCP cycle.
Komolafe said the programme would also deliver about 170,000 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas annually, providing clean energy to approximately 1.4 million households across the country.
He explained that 49 flare sites were auctioned, with 42 successful bidders now set to capture and commercialise between 250 and 300 million standard cubic feet of gas per day that is currently being flared.
According to him, the initiative will eliminate about six million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, attract up to $2bn in investment and unlock nearly three gigawatts of power generation capacity.
Komolafe added that the programme represents a major step toward reducing environmental pollution, boosting energy supply and creating sustainable employment opportunities nationwide.
