Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), has reiterated his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, declaring that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has failed to learn from its past political setbacks.

Wike made the statement during a public event in Abuja, where he addressed questions about his continued alignment with the ruling administration despite being a prominent member of the PDP.

‘They have not learnt’

The former Rivers State governor said the PDP’s internal crisis and inability to resolve lingering leadership disputes were key factors that led to its struggles in recent elections.

According to him, instead of engaging in sincere reflection and reform, the party has continued to repeat the same mistakes.

“You cannot move forward if you refuse to admit where you went wrong,” Wike said. “Up till now, the PDP has not learnt from what happened.”

He added that meaningful opposition requires discipline, unity and strategic planning — qualities he believes the party has yet to fully restore.

Reaffirming support for Tinubu

Wike also reaffirmed that his support for Tinubu is based on what he described as national interest rather than partisan loyalty.

He maintained that governance should not be reduced to party affiliation, stressing that he would continue to back policies he considers beneficial to Nigerians.

“As long as the president is working for the country, I will support what is right,” he said.

Wike noted that cooperation between the presidency and the FCT administration has enabled progress on infrastructure projects and reforms within Abuja.

Political implications

Wike’s position has remained controversial within the PDP since the 2023 general elections, when he distanced himself from the party’s presidential campaign and adopted what many described as a cross-party stance.

Political analysts say his latest comments could further deepen divisions within the opposition party while strengthening perceptions of shifting alliances ahead of future elections.

The PDP leadership has not issued an official response to Wike’s latest remarks at the time of filing this report.
