Wike says appeal by Turaki-led PDP faction won’t stop national convention
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has insisted that the planned national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will proceed as scheduled, despite a legal challenge by a faction led by Kabiru Turaki.
Wike made the statement amid reports that the Turaki-led group had approached the Supreme Court seeking to halt the convention slated for March 29 and 30. The faction is asking the court to restrain the opposing camp within the party from going ahead with the exercise.
Reacting, Wike maintained that the legal move would not disrupt the party’s plans, stressing that preparations for the convention are already at an advanced stage. He argued that internal disagreements should not be allowed to derail party activities.
According to him, the PDP remains committed to strengthening its structures and conducting its convention in line with established procedures, regardless of ongoing disputes.
The development highlights the deepening internal crisis within the opposition party, with rival factions pursuing parallel strategies both politically and legally.
Political observers say the outcome of the court process could have significant implications for the party’s unity and leadership structure, especially as it prepares for future elections.
