The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims that the Federal Government’s housing project for judges is aimed at influencing or compromising the independence of the judiciary.
Wike made this clarification while inspecting the newly built judges’ residential quarters in Abuja. He described the allegations as unfounded and misleading, insisting that the initiative is purely a welfare project designed to improve the living conditions of judicial officers.
According to the FCT minister, providing decent accommodation for judges is part of government efforts to strengthen institutions and support the judiciary in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities without undue hardship.
“There is nothing political or hidden about this project,” Wike said. “Judges deserve a comfortable and secure environment to live in. This is about welfare, not inducement.”
He stressed that successive governments have implemented welfare programmes for different arms of government and that the judiciary should not be excluded. Wike also noted that improving judges’ welfare would enhance efficiency and professionalism within the justice system.
The housing project, which includes modern facilities and improved security, is expected to be allocated to qualified judicial officers in line with established guidelines.
Despite assurances from the FCT administration, the project has continued to generate debate, with critics expressing concerns over potential influence. However, government officials maintain that the initiative poses no threat to judicial independence.
