Wike-Backed PDP Caretaker Committee Attends INEC Meeting
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caretaker committee backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday attended the quarterly consultative meeting of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.
The PDP delegation to the meeting was led by the party’s Acting National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, alongside the Acting National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, and the National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature.
Our correspondent observed that Mohammed occupied a front-row seat clearly marked “PDP Chairman,” while Anyanwu sat directly behind him on a seat designated “PDP National Secretary,” as the meeting commenced at INEC headquarters.
The development comes a day after a Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan nullified the PDP National Convention held on November 15, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State. The court further directed Tanimu Turaki (SAN) and others to stop parading themselves as national officers of the party.
Before the court ruling, PDP governors had endorsed the Ibadan convention, which produced Turaki and members of the National Working Committee for a four-year tenure.
However, Wike and his allies — including Mohammed and Anyanwu — had consistently insisted that they remained the legitimate Acting National Chairman and Acting National Secretary of the party.
Following the judgment, the Wike-aligned faction maintained its position, citing the establishment of a 13-member caretaker committee on December 8, 2025. The committee was constituted shortly before the expiration of former chairman Umar Damagum’s tenure on December 9.
The caretaker committee, led by Mohammed and Anyanwu, was given a 60-day mandate to stabilise the party and oversee its affairs pending further resolutions.
Thursday’s appearance of the caretaker committee at the INEC consultative meeting is expected to further intensify the internal power struggle within the PDP, as rival factions continue to lay claim to the party’s national leadership.
