Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has called for the creation of two more states in Nigeria’s South-East region to ensure fairness and balance among all regions in the country.

He made the call while speaking in Owerri at a public hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution. Uzodinma emphasized that constitutional reforms are crucial to addressing the long-standing grievances and agitations across Nigeria, especially in the South-East, which he says has been marginalized in terms of state creation.

Key Proposals by Governor Uzodinma:

Two New States for the South-East:
To bring the number of states in the region in line with other zones in Nigeria.

Definition of Indigenous Status:
Suggested that being an indigene should be legally based on birth or long-term residence, not just ancestry. This would promote a sense of belonging across the country.

Rotational Presidency:
Proposed zoning the presidency not only between North and South but also among all six geopolitical zones to promote fairness and national stability.

State Policing:
Supported the decentralization of police powers to improve security and make law enforcement more effective and responsive.

Governor Uzodinma urged the National Assembly to consider these ideas during the constitution review, stressing the importance of a constitution that truly reflects Nigeria’s diverse values and aspirations.
