The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has directed the immediate opening of a newly completed 15-kilometre section of the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway to motorists in a bid to ease traffic congestion and improve transportation across the South-East region.

The minister gave the directive during an inspection of ongoing road projects, noting that the partial opening would help reduce travel time and enhance the movement of goods and services along the busy economic corridor linking Enugu and Anambra states.

Umahi explained that the decision was part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to accelerate infrastructure delivery and ensure that completed sections of major highways are put to public use while construction continues on other segments.

He also urged motorists to comply with traffic advisories and safety guidelines around construction zones, stressing that contractors remain on site to complete outstanding works and maintain quality standards.

Transport stakeholders and residents have welcomed the development, expressing optimism that improved road conditions would boost commercial activities, reduce vehicle maintenance costs and enhance connectivity within the region.

Officials reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing the entire expressway project in line with ongoing infrastructure reforms aimed at supporting economic growth and regional integration.
