Tinubu Swears In New INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan

President Bola Tinubu will today (Thursday) swear in Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The ceremony is scheduled for 12:00 noon at the Council Chamber, Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
Key attendees include members of the Federal Executive Council, National Assembly leaders, legal luminaries, and INEC officials.
Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Professor of Law at the University of Jos, was confirmed by the Senate on October 16, 2025, after nomination by Tinubu and endorsement by the National Council of State.
He replaces Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who completed his tenure on October 7, 2025. Tinubu said Amupitan was chosen for his integrity, apolitical stance, and service record—and is the first INEC chairman from Kogi State.
Following the swearing-in, Amupitan will hold his first official meeting with INEC directors at 1:30 p.m. at the commission’s headquarters.
