The National Assembly has once again extended the implementation period of the capital component of the 2024 national budget, moving the deadline to December 31, 2025. This marks the second extension of the budget’s execution timeline, a move that has sparked widespread criticism of President Bola Tinubu and the federal legislature.

During Tuesday’s plenary, the Senate adopted and passed the amendment to the appropriation bill after it went through first, second, and third readings in quick succession. The amendment was deliberated upon at the Committee on Supply, with Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin presiding over the session.

Leading the debate, Senator Olamilekan Adeola, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, said the extension is necessary to enable the Federal Government to complete various capital projects captured in the budget. He further noted that due to funding constraints, the government was unable to implement all planned expenditures within the initial timeframe.
