Sultan Urges Muslims to Watch for New Moon on Saturday

The Sultanate Council of Sokoto has announced that Saturday, August 23, 2025 (29th Safar, 1447 AH) will be the official day for sighting the new moon of Rabi’ul Awwal 1447 AH.
In a statement on Friday, the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Prof. Sambo Junaidu (Wazirin Sokoto), called on Muslims across Nigeria to actively take part in the moon-sighting exercise.
“Muslims are requested to look out for the new moon of Rabi’ul Awwal on Saturday and report its sighting to the nearest District or Village Head for onward communication to His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto,” the statement read.
The Council stressed the importance of the exercise, noting that the sighting will mark the beginning of Rabi’ul Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar, celebrated as the birth month of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
