SpaceX Now Building Self-Growing City on the Moon, Says Elon Musk
SpaceX founder Elon Musk has said the company is developing technology that could enable the construction of a self-sustaining human settlement on the Moon, marking what he described as a major step toward long-term space habitation.
Speaking during a recent appearance, Musk said SpaceX is working on systems that would allow human settlements to grow and expand autonomously, relying less on constant resupply missions from Earth.
According to Musk, the idea behind a “self-growing city” is to use local lunar resources, automated construction, and advanced life-support systems to create habitats capable of sustaining human life over extended periods.
What Musk Said
Musk explained that SpaceX’s long-term vision involves building settlements that can replicate and expand themselves, using robotics and in-situ resource utilisation — a process that involves converting materials found on the Moon into usable building components.
He added that such technology would be critical not only for lunar missions but also for future plans involving Mars.
