Vice-President Kashim Shettima has criticised the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over what he described as the party’s failure to properly manage its digital membership registration platform.

Shettima said the ADC’s online membership portal has reportedly been overwhelmed by fake identities and irregular registrations, raising questions about the party’s readiness to manage digital electoral processes.

The vice-president made the remarks while reacting to the opposition party’s consistent calls for real-time electronic transmission of election results in Nigeria.

According to him, the same platform that has been advocating for advanced digital electoral processes has struggled to successfully handle its own internal digital membership registration system.

ADC had on March 1 launched its online membership registration portal nationwide as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections and in compliance with provisions of the amended Electoral Act.

However, Shettima said the system was quickly flooded with questionable registrations, including multiple fake identities, suggesting weaknesses in the platform’s verification process.

He argued that the development exposes the challenges associated with deploying fully digital systems without adequate safeguards.

The vice-president added that managing digital election infrastructure requires strong verification mechanisms and secure technological frameworks to prevent manipulation.

Shettima maintained that while electoral reforms and technological innovation remain important, such systems must be carefully designed and tested to avoid vulnerabilities that could undermine credibility.

He urged political parties and stakeholders to focus on strengthening institutional capacity and technological security as Nigeria continues to improve its electoral process.

The debate over electronic transmission of election results has remained a major issue in Nigeria’s electoral reform discussions, with opposition parties advocating for greater transparency and real-time result reporting.
