SERAP Sues Governors, Wike Over ₦14trn Fuel Subsidy Savings
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against the 36 state governors of Nigeria and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, demanding full accountability for an estimated ₦14 trillion in fuel subsidy savings.
In the suit filed at the Federal High Court, SERAP is asking the court to compel the governors and the FCT minister to publicly account for how the funds—accrued following the removal of petrol subsidy—have been received, allocated, and spent.
SERAP argues that the fuel subsidy savings were meant to ease economic hardship on Nigerians through improved social services, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other welfare programmes at the state level. According to the organisation, the continued lack of transparency over the use of the funds raises serious concerns about accountability and governance.
The group is also seeking an order directing the defendants to disclose details of the amounts received by each state and the FCT, as well as concrete evidence showing how the funds have benefited citizens.
SERAP maintains that Nigerians have a constitutional right to know how public funds are managed and insists that transparency is essential, especially at a time of rising living costs and economic strain across the country.
