Scores Killed, Abducted as Boko Haram/ISWAP Invade Borno Community — Ndume
Senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, has raised alarm over a deadly attack carried out by suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgents in a community in Borno State, leaving several people killed and many others abducted.
Ndume disclosed that the attack occurred when heavily armed insurgents stormed the community, shooting indiscriminately and setting parts of the area ablaze. According to him, the attackers also abducted a number of residents during the raid.
The senator described the incident as tragic and disturbing, noting that the continued attacks on communities in Borno State remain a major concern despite years of military operations against insurgents in the North-East.
He explained that the insurgents arrived in large numbers and overpowered local security volunteers before carrying out the killings and kidnappings. Many residents reportedly fled their homes to nearby villages and towns for safety.
Ndume said the attack once again highlights the urgent need to strengthen security operations and improve intelligence gathering to prevent further loss of lives in vulnerable communities.
He urged the federal government and security agencies to intensify efforts to protect rural communities that remain exposed to insurgent attacks, especially those located far from major military formations.
According to him, many of the affected communities lack sufficient security presence, making them easy targets for terrorists who frequently move through remote areas.
The lawmaker also called for increased support for the Nigerian military and other security agencies battling insurgency in the region, stressing that the fight against terrorism requires sustained commitment and adequate resources.
Residents of the affected community have reportedly appealed for urgent intervention from the government and humanitarian organisations, as many families have been displaced following the attack.
Meanwhile, security forces have reportedly begun operations in the area to track down the attackers and rescue those abducted during the raid.
Borno State has remained one of the regions most affected by insurgency in Nigeria, with several communities continuing to face sporadic attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to restore peace and stability across the North-East.
