A legal storm is gathering in Oyo’s royal circle as the Alaafin moves against the emergence of the council’s new leadership.
The Alaafin of Oyo is considering heading to court to challenge the emergence of the Olubadan of Ibadanland as the new chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, a development that has sparked fresh tension within the state’s traditional institution.
Sources close to the palace disclosed that the move is being weighed amid dissatisfaction over the process that led to the selection of Olubadan of Ibadanland as council chairman, with concerns that long-standing traditions and historical hierarchy were sidelined.
The Alaafin of Oyo, regarded as one of the most influential monarchs in Yorubaland, is said to be consulting legal advisers and senior chiefs on the possibility of challenging the decision in court if dialogue fails.
The Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs serves as a key advisory body to the state government on cultural and traditional matters, and its leadership has historically been a sensitive issue, often shaped by seniority, age, and customary precedence among monarchs.
Insiders say the Alaafin believes due process was not fully observed in the emergence of the new chairman, arguing that the development could set a precedent capable of weakening established royal protocols in Oyo State.
Although neither palace has issued an official statement, the situation has already triggered intense discussions within traditional circles, with fears that a legal confrontation could strain relations between two of the most revered royal stools in the state.
Observers note that the looming dispute, if taken to court, could deepen divisions within the council and distract from its role in promoting unity and cultural stability. Some stakeholders are therefore calling for mediation and government intervention to avert a full-blown royal crisis.
As consultations continue behind closed doors, attention is now focused on whether the matter will be resolved through dialogue or escalate into a historic legal battle within Oyo’s traditional institution.
