Tension is mounting within the All Progressives Congress as some party leaders have reportedly called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove Nyesom Wike as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Sources within the ruling party disclosed that the aggrieved leaders accuse Wike of actions and statements they say are fuelling internal divisions and worsening political tensions, particularly amid ongoing crises in Rivers State and within the APC’s ranks.
According to party insiders, the critics allege that Wike’s political posture since his appointment as FCT minister has created discomfort among key stakeholders, with some accusing him of operating in ways inconsistent with party unity and discipline. They argue that his continued presence in the cabinet could further polarise the party ahead of critical political realignments and future elections.
The calls for Wike’s removal are said to have intensified following recent developments in Rivers State, where political disagreements involving the state government and the House of Assembly have escalated, drawing national attention and criticism.
Those pushing for his removal reportedly want President Tinubu to act swiftly to calm rising tensions within the party and prevent the crisis from spilling over into broader national politics. They insist that decisive action would help restore internal cohesion and reassure party members across the country.
However, other APC figures are said to be urging caution, warning that removing Wike could trigger fresh political backlash, given his influence and political base. They argue that dialogue and internal conflict-resolution mechanisms should be prioritised over drastic measures.
As of the time of filing this report, neither President Tinubu nor the Presidency has issued an official response to the calls. Wike has also not publicly reacted to the demands for his removal.
The development underscores growing cracks within the ruling party and raises fresh questions about how the Tinubu administration will manage internal dissent while maintaining political stability.
