Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has challenged former Ekiti State governor Ayo Fayose to provide concrete evidence to support his claim that Makinde received ₦50 billion from President Bola Tinubu following the recent Ibadan explosion.
Makinde described the allegation as false, reckless, and politically motivated, insisting that no such payment was made to him by the federal government or the president.
Speaking through his media aides, the Oyo governor said he was surprised by Fayose’s claim, stressing that matters of public safety and disaster response should not be turned into tools for political propaganda.
“If Chief Fayose has proof that I collected ₦50 billion from President Tinubu, he should present it publicly,” Makinde said. “Baseless accusations do not help the victims of the Ibadan incident or the people of Oyo State.”
Makinde maintained that the handling of the Ibadan explosion has been transparent, adding that relevant agencies were promptly mobilised to manage the situation and support affected residents. He noted that disaster response funds, where applicable, follow established procedures and are not handed out as personal payments.
The governor further accused some political actors of attempting to exploit tragedy to score points, warning that such actions undermine public trust and distract from governance.
Fayose had earlier alleged that Makinde benefitted financially from the presidency in relation to the Ibadan incident, a claim that quickly gained traction on social media but has not been backed by any documentary or official evidence.
As of the time of filing this report, Fayose has not publicly presented proof to substantiate the ₦50 billion claim.
The development has sparked renewed debate within political circles, with observers urging public figures to exercise restraint and rely on facts when making serious allegations involving public funds.
