Portable Arraigned Over Car Theft, Assault Court Remands Singer in Custody After Nine-Count Charge
Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has been arraigned before the Federal High Court sitting in Ota, Ogun State, over alleged involvement in car theft and assault.
The artist was docked on Monday on a nine-count charge bordering on conspiracy, theft of a motor vehicle, assault, conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace, and other related offences. The charges were brought against him by law enforcement authorities following complaints linked to a violent incident and the alleged unlawful possession of a vehicle.
According to the prosecution, Portable was accused of forcefully taking possession of a car and physically assaulting individuals during an altercation, actions said to be contrary to relevant provisions of Nigerian law. The offences were reportedly committed within Ogun State.
When the charges were read in court, the singer pleaded not guilty to all counts. His legal counsel subsequently applied for bail, urging the court to exercise discretion in granting him temporary freedom pending the determination of the case.
However, the prosecution opposed the bail application, arguing that the seriousness of the charges and the circumstances surrounding the case required the defendant to be remanded while investigations and trial continue.
After listening to both parties, the presiding judge ordered that Portable be remanded in custody and adjourned the case to a later date for hearing of the bail application and commencement of trial.
Portable, known for his controversial lifestyle and frequent run-ins with authorities, has been involved in several public disputes in the past.
