The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Kayode Adeniyi, the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the fatal crash that claimed the lives of two close associates of heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua.

The tragic accident occurred on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway and resulted in the deaths of Joshua’s training staff, Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele.

Confirming the development on Thursday, the spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said Adeniyi was taken into custody after being discharged from a Lagos hospital on New Year’s Eve.

According to police sources, the 47-year-old driver, a long-standing member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, was treated for minor injuries before being transported to Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, where the crash occurred.

“The driver was released after treatment for minor injuries and subsequently brought to the state police headquarters for questioning. He is currently in a stable condition and has given his account of the incident,” a police source disclosed.

Investigations revealed that Adeniyi was allegedly driving well above the 65mph speed limit on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway when a tyre burst during an overtaking manoeuvre near the Danco area. The vehicle reportedly lost control and rammed into an illegally parked truck loaded with soya beans.

Police further disclosed that Adeniyi is expected to be charged with reckless driving within 48 hours, although the ongoing bank holiday may cause a slight delay in court proceedings.

Meanwhile, Anthony Joshua, who was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash, has since been discharged from hospital after receiving medical attention. The boxer is said to be in stable condition.

The Ogun State Police Command assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway and that anyone found culpable would be made to face the full weight of the law.
