Peter Obi Slams Poor 2025 UTME Results, Demands Urgent Fix To Nigeria’s Broken Education System

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised alarm over the dismal performance in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), calling it a clear sign of Nigeria’s deeply troubled education system.
Reacting through a post on his official X handle on Monday, Obi described the UTME results as “disturbing” and a direct consequence of decades of neglect and underinvestment in the education sector.
“The latest JAMB results once again highlight the consequences of decades of underinvestment in education—a sector that should be central to our national development strategy,” Obi stated.
He noted that the poor performance reflects deeper structural issues, and urged immediate reforms to rescue the sector from further deterioration.
Highlighting Nigeria’s lag in global education standards, Obi compared the country’s university enrollment to that of Bangladesh. He revealed that Nigeria currently has about 2 million students enrolled in its universities, while the National University of Bangladesh alone has over 3.4 million—despite Bangladesh having only about 75% of Nigeria’s population.
Obi called on policymakers to make education a national priority, warning that continued neglect will undermine the country’s progress and future potential.
