Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for a constitutional change to limit Nigeria’s presidency to a single five-year term.

Speaking in Bauchi during a courtesy visit to Governor Bala Mohammed, Obi argued that the current four-year renewable tenure encourages leaders to focus on re-election campaigns rather than governance.

“I have said it before, and I’ll say it again — there should be no second tenure for the president. It should be five years straight, like in South Korea. That way, leaders know they have one job: to serve,” he said.

The 2027 presidential hopeful vowed that if elected, he would serve only one term and leave office after four years, despite advocating a national shift to five years. He insisted the reform would ensure leaders concentrate fully on delivering results instead of preparing for another election.
