Peter Obi has officially defected from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move widely seen as a major shake-up in Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former Anambra State governor announced his decision while addressing supporters and political stakeholders, describing the move as part of a broader strategy to build a united opposition capable of rescuing Nigeria from its current economic and governance challenges.

According to Obi, the decision to join the ADC was driven by the need for a strong national coalition that cuts across party lines, regions, and interests. He stressed that Nigeria’s problems require collective action rather than fragmented political efforts.

“This is not about personal ambition alone. It is about the future of Nigeria. We must come together to build a credible alternative that puts the people first,” Obi said.

Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, gained massive youth support and nationwide followership but fell short of victory. Since then, there have been sustained calls from his supporters for a broader opposition alliance ahead of 2027.

Political analysts believe Obi’s move to the ADC could reposition the party as a major force, especially if other opposition figures and parties heed his call for unity. The development is also expected to intensify realignments within Nigeria’s political space as the 2027 race gradually takes shape.

The ADC leadership welcomed Obi into the party, describing his defection as a significant boost to the party’s national profile and reform agenda.

As preparations for the next general elections gather momentum, Obi’s defection is likely to trigger fresh debates, alliances, and strategic calculations across Nigeria’s political divide.
