Oyebanji Warns LGs Against Misusing Funds

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has cautioned local government chairmen in the state against financial recklessness and mismanagement, warning that such practices could undermine the benefits of the financial autonomy recently granted to councils.
Oyebanji gave the warning on Monday during the inauguration of projects facilitated by the Chairman of Ero Local Council Development Area, Felicia Ibiloye. He stressed that the essence of financial freedom for councils was to enable them to embark on impactful projects that would improve the lives of the people at the grassroots.
The governor noted that the July 11, 2024 Supreme Court judgment had granted financial autonomy to the 774 local governments in Nigeria, ruling it unconstitutional for governors to withhold allocations meant for them.
> “Today in our state, our councils are embarking on life-changing projects in road infrastructures, healthcare delivery, school renovation and construction, market stall construction and reconstruction, and commercial farming to boost food security, among others.
It is not gainsaying that all these were achieved because the administration preferred financial autonomy for our councils,” Oyebanji said.
He warned, however, that the opportunity must not be abused, stressing that funds should be used strictly for developmental purposes rather than for frivolities.
Represented at the event by Deputy Governor Mrs. Monisade Afuye, the governor charged council bosses to show accountability and prudence, adding that their performance would determine the continued confidence reposed in them by both the state government and the people.
“Our council bosses should redouble efforts, work hard and reciprocate the governor’s gestures by being prudent and placing a high premium on the delivery of democracy dividends to our people. We hope that this opportunity wouldn’t be abused in the overall interest of our people,” he added.
