Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has defended his recent statement concerning Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, amid a wave of backlash from legal and political figures.

The controversy began when Okpebholo warned that Peter Obi must obtain security clearance before visiting Edo State — a remark critics described as threatening and undemocratic.

Prominent human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), condemned the comment and advised Obi to seek legal redress. Similarly, Dr. Yunusa Tanko of the African Democratic Congress and Obidient Movement accused the governor of intimidation and spreading misinformation.

In response, the Edo State Government released a statement clarifying the governor’s intent, saying his comments were misinterpreted. According to Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary:

> “Governor Okpebholo did not issue any threat. He only emphasized the need for politically exposed individuals to notify and seek security clearance from the state before public events.
