Ohuabunwa urges FG to support private universities with funding

Former President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Sam Ohuabunwa, has called on the Federal Government to extend financial support and subventions to private universities, especially those training critical professionals such as pharmacists and medical doctors.
Ohuabunwa made this appeal on Friday at Gregory University, Uturu (GUU), during his formal reception as the pioneer Chairman of the university’s Board of Trustees.
According to him, the government’s current efforts are not enough to meet the nation’s manpower needs in healthcare and other key sectors.
> “It is expensive to train pharmacists, especially to ensure they get hands-on knowledge, clerkship, preceptorship, and practical experience. The government should support both private and public institutions providing this kind of training,” he said.
He questioned why private universities have been excluded from government assistance, stressing that they complement government’s responsibility of workforce development.
> “Private universities are helping government fulfil its obligations. They deserve support and subventions, particularly those producing essential manpower like pharmacists and doctors,” he added.
Ohuabunwa further emphasised that prioritising healthcare and education is critical for Nigeria’s sustainable economic growth.
