A former governorship aspirant in Delta State has criticised Peter Obi over his recent defection from the Labour Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as evidence of leadership failure.

The ex-aspirant said Obi’s exit exposes what he called an inability to unite and manage internal disagreements within the Labour Party, particularly after the 2023 general elections. According to him, a leader of Obi’s stature should have prioritised reconciliation and party-building rather than switching platforms.

He argued that Obi, who rose to national prominence on the LP platform, owed party members the responsibility of strengthening internal structures instead of abandoning the party at a critical period. The critic added that repeated defections by prominent politicians weaken Nigeria’s democratic culture and reduce ideological consistency.

The former aspirant further claimed that Obi’s defection could demoralise loyal supporters who invested time and resources in building the Labour Party into a major political force, especially among young voters.

Reacting to the development, some political observers say Obi’s move to the ADC may reshape opposition alignments ahead of future elections, while others insist it could hurt his credibility as a reform-minded politician.

Neither Peter Obi nor officials of the Labour Party have formally responded to the criticism as of the time of filing this report.
