Former Anambra State Governor and prominent political figure, Peter Obi, has condemned the recent attack on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secretariat in Cross River State, describing the incident as a serious threat to democratic values.

In a statement reacting to the development, Obi said the violent disruption of political activities undermines the principles of peaceful participation and freedom of association that are essential to a functioning democracy. He warned that such incidents could create fear among party members and discourage citizens from engaging in the political process.

The attack, which reportedly involved the destruction of property and disruption of party operations, has raised concerns about political tension and security in the state. Obi called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are identified and brought to justice.

He emphasised the need for political actors across party lines to promote tolerance, dialogue and respect for differing views, especially as preparations gradually begin for future elections. According to him, safeguarding democratic institutions requires collective responsibility and commitment from both leaders and supporters.

Obi also urged the government to strengthen measures aimed at protecting political offices and gatherings, noting that preventing violence and intimidation is crucial for maintaining public confidence in the electoral system.

Observers say the incident highlights growing concerns about political rivalry and security challenges in parts of the country, with calls mounting for proactive steps to ensure peaceful political engagement.
