Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised the reported arrest of cleric Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar, describing the development as disturbing and potentially harmful to Nigeria’s democratic values.

In a statement reacting to the incident, Obi expressed concern over what he termed growing intolerance and actions capable of undermining civil liberties. He stressed that the rule of law and respect for fundamental human rights must remain central to governance and national stability.

According to him, any action perceived as suppressing dissent or limiting freedom of expression could erode public confidence in democratic institutions. He therefore called on relevant authorities to ensure that due process is followed in handling the matter and that transparency is maintained throughout any investigation.

Obi also urged political leaders and security agencies to prioritise dialogue and lawful procedures when addressing sensitive issues involving religious or community figures.

Observers say the comments reflect broader concerns among stakeholders about the need to protect democratic norms and promote peaceful coexistence in a diverse society.

The former Anambra State governor further appealed for calm, encouraging citizens to remain law-abiding while allowing the appropriate legal processes to take their course.
