Northern Governors Endorse State Police, Urge Swift Legislative Action

The Northern Governors Forum (NGF) has thrown its weight behind the creation of state police as a strategic move to strengthen security across Nigeria.
In a communique released at the end of the Forum’s meeting on Saturday, the governors called on the National Assembly to fast-track the legislation necessary to establish state police forces.
The statement, delivered by the Forum’s Chairman and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, emphasized the urgency of the issue.
> “The Forum resolved to support the creation of state police and called on the National Assembly to expedite action on the enactment of the legal framework for its take-off,” Yahaya said.
Beyond advocating for state police, the governors also resolved to enhance inter-state border surveillance to combat rising threats such as insurgency, banditry, and other criminal activities.
The Forum expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for its ongoing efforts to address national security challenges and infrastructure needs. It also affirmed its commitment to deeper collaboration with the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) to tackle security issues more effectively.
The meeting was attended by all 19 Northern Governors as well as state Chairmen of traditional rulers.
