No zoning arrangement yet for 2027 governorship — Kwara APC
The Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says it has not reached any decision on zoning its governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The state party chairman, Sunday Fagbemi, made this known during a radio programme monitored in Ilorin on Friday night, amid growing calls for power to shift to the Kwara North Senatorial District.
Fagbemi explained that the issue of zoning remains the prerogative of the party’s national leadership and that no discussion or agreement had been made at the state level.
> “If there will be any zoning, the national executive of the party will give the directive. But as of now, nothing of such is on the offing. We have not even discussed it because no schedule has been set yet. Anyone interested in contesting for any position has the right to do so,” he stated.
He further noted that even if the state chapter decides to adopt zoning, such a resolution would still require ratification from the party’s national secretariat.
> “Even if we decide in Kwara that this is what we want, it must still get the approval of the national secretariat,” Fagbemi added.
The clarification follows renewed agitation from stakeholders in Kwara North, who have urged the APC to concede its 2027 governorship ticket to the zone, which has not produced a governor since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
The debate over zoning continues to shape political discussions in the state as the ruling party prepares for another electoral cycle.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, currently serving his second and final term, is expected to complete his tenure in 2027, marking the end of an administration that began in 2019.
