NGE, NUJ, SERAP demand Wike probe over journalist threat
Media and civil society organisations, including the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), have called for an investigation into remarks made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over an alleged threat directed at a journalist.
The groups described the comment as deeply concerning, warning that it could be perceived as an attack on press freedom and the safety of media practitioners in Nigeria.
In separate statements, the organisations urged relevant authorities to launch a thorough and transparent probe into the incident, stressing that public office holders must be held accountable for statements capable of inciting harm or intimidation.
They emphasised that a free and independent press is essential to democracy, adding that journalists must be able to carry out their duties without fear of harassment or threats.
The groups also called on Wike to clarify his remarks and take responsibility where necessary, in order to maintain public trust and uphold democratic values.
Observers say the development has reignited conversations around press freedom, responsible speech and the relationship between government officials and the media.
