Ibadan, Oyo State – December 11, 2025:
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ibadan Branch, has urged Governor Seyi Makinde and relevant security agencies to urgently overhaul and strengthen the security architecture of Oyo State to prevent further escalation of crime.

The appeal was made on Thursday by Ibrahim Lawal, Chairman of the NBA’s Ibadan Branch, during a press briefing at the Afe Babalola NBA House in Ibadan. The event took place ahead of the 2025 NBA Ibadan Law Week, scheduled to begin next week.

Lawal highlighted that Oyo State was once regarded as one of the most secure states in Nigeria, with a robust security framework that protected lives and property. He expressed concern that this security structure appears to have weakened, and called on the state government to take decisive action.

He said:

> “Oyo used to be the most secure state in Nigeria. The security architecture was very tight, but I think the present administration has relaxed, and that’s the effect we are seeing. We can only urge the government to come together, look at the security architecture, and return it to where it was so we can build on it.”

The call for improved security comes amid disturbing incidents, including the kidnapping of Wale Oriade, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State. Oriade was reportedly abducted around 7:06 p.m. in his office in Ibadan. The attackers, who were said to be in a blue Nissan Micra with two occupants — a driver and a gunman — forcibly seized him and drove off in the same vehicle.

Responding to growing concerns, the Oyo State Government, during an expanded security council meeting presided over by Governor Makinde on Wednesday, reassured residents of ongoing efforts to ensure maximum security of lives and property.

While acknowledging the challenges, Lawal stated that both the Federal Government and the military are doing their best, but stressed that the state government must take further action to find lasting solutions to the security problems.
