The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has clarified that its enforcement of the ban on alcoholic beverages sold in sachets and small plastic or glass bottles is aimed at protecting children and young people, not punishing manufacturers.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the policy was driven by serious public health concerns and growing evidence linking sachet alcohol to increased underage drinking across Nigeria.

According to Adeyeye, alcohol products packaged in sachets and containers below 200 millilitres are cheap, easily accessible and often consumed by minors, contributing to early alcohol exposure, abuse and long-term health risks.

“This intervention is not punitive. It is a public health measure designed to safeguard children and young people from the harmful effects of alcohol,” she said.

NAFDAC explained that the enforcement followed a directive by the Senate, with the full backing of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, after repeated warnings and engagements with stakeholders in the alcohol industry.

The agency noted that manufacturers were given ample time to comply with the policy before enforcement began, adding that the ban is part of broader efforts to reduce alcohol-related harm, especially among vulnerable groups.

Adeyeye reaffirmed NAFDAC’s commitment to working with manufacturers, distributors and other stakeholders to ensure compliance while prioritising the health and safety of Nigerians.

The enforcement has sparked debate nationwide, with industry players raising concerns over economic impact, while public health advocates have largely welcomed the move as a step towards protecting children and promoting responsible alcohol consumption.
