Residents of Coker-Aguda, a densely populated area in Surulere, Lagos, continue to face significant challenges in accessing quality healthcare services, highlighting broader concerns about primary healthcare delivery in urban communities.

Many residents say limited availability of well-equipped health facilities, high treatment costs and overcrowding at existing centres have made it difficult to receive timely and effective medical care. For vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly, these challenges often result in delayed treatment and worsening health conditions.

Community members have also pointed to the shortage of medical personnel and essential drugs as key issues affecting service delivery. In some cases, patients are forced to travel long distances or rely on private clinics, which may be financially out of reach for many households.

Health experts emphasise that strengthening primary healthcare systems at the grassroots level is critical to improving overall health outcomes. They recommend increased investment in infrastructure, recruitment of qualified personnel and better supply chains for essential medicines.

Local stakeholders have called on government authorities and development partners to prioritise community-based healthcare interventions, including mobile clinics, health insurance awareness and public health education.

Observers say addressing these challenges will not only improve access to care but also reduce the burden on tertiary health institutions and enhance the well-being of residents.
