LP Slams Gov Okpebholo Over Peter Obi’s Entry Ban, CSOs React

The Labour Party (LP) has criticized Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, following his controversial remarks restricting former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from visiting Edo without prior approval.
Governor Okpebholo had, during a press interaction last Friday, declared that Obi must seek his permission before entering the state, claiming the former governor’s recent visit sparked unrest in Benin City.
According to the governor, Obi’s June 7 visit to St. Philomena Hospital School of Nursing Sciences—where he donated ₦15 million towards ongoing projects—allegedly ignited tensions that resulted in the deaths of three individuals.
> “There’s a new sheriff in town. He cannot just come into Edo without informing me. His security will not be guaranteed. If anything happens to him here, he will have himself to blame. I’m not joking,” Governor Okpebholo said.
The governor’s comments have drawn sharp criticism from LP members, civil society organizations (CSOs), and supporters of Obi, popularly known as Obidients, who described the remarks as undemocratic and provocative.
