Lagos to Pay Residents for Recyclable Waste

The Lagos State Government has urged residents to convert household waste into income under its renewed recycling campaign, “Cash for Trash.”
The initiative, managed by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Environmental Protection Agency, allows residents to earn money by exchanging recyclable materials such as plastics and cans.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced on Monday that the state rewards participants every Thursday for bringing in sorted recyclables.
“Did you know your trash can turn into cash?” Wahab said in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account. “Our recycling team is in Lagos Island, showing communities how to make it happen. It’s a win for your wallet and a win for our city.”
A video shared by the commissioner showed LAWMA agents weighing bags of plastics on portable scales and handing out cash rewards to residents.
The initiative aims to reduce environmental pollution, promote recycling, and support the state’s goal of achieving a cleaner, greener Lagos.
