Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has expressed concern over the high number of inmates awaiting trial at the Keffi Medium Security Correctional Centre.

Sule stated this during an inspection visit to the facility on Wednesday, a day after 16 inmates escaped. According to the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), seven of the escapees have been recaptured, while efforts continue to apprehend the remaining nine.

The governor, accompanied by top government officials, noted that congestion was worsened by inmates whose cases are pending in courts within the Federal Capital Territory. He pledged to work towards speeding up trials to ease the overcrowding.

Sule directed the immediate supply of 500 mattresses to improve living conditions and donated ₦1 million for inmate welfare. He urged prisoners to remain disciplined while investigations continue into the cause of the jailbreak.
