The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally recognised a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in a development that could significantly impact the party’s internal power structure.

The electoral body’s decision follows ongoing disputes within the PDP, where rival factions have laid claim to the party’s leadership. By recognising the Wike-backed bloc of the National Working Committee (NWC), INEC has effectively affirmed its position in the leadership tussle.

In a related development, a court has reportedly barred the faction led by Tanimu Turaki from parading itself as the legitimate leadership of the party. The ruling is seen as a legal setback for the Turaki group, which has been contesting control of the party.

Political analysts say the dual developments—INEC’s recognition and the court’s intervention—may further deepen divisions within the PDP while also shaping the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Observers note that the crisis within the opposition party has continued to raise concerns about unity and its ability to present a strong front in future electoral contests.

Stakeholders have called for dialogue and reconciliation among party leaders to resolve the ongoing leadership dispute and stabilise the party.
